Email marketing is an increasingly powerful and ever so affordable way to turn prospects into clients.

To build a list you can either gather your own names or you can rent a list.  Having said that, I'd highly recommend building your own because the email list rental industry is still in its infancy, and with that you will run into one of two hurdles.

You'll either purchase a list of "unsolicited" names and end up spamming your email list which can get you banned by your ISP, or you could rent a reputable "opt-in" list but you'll find that the costs for doing this are even more expensive than hiring a snail mail list.

The Five C's of Email Marketing

Email marketing is one of the most commonly used methods of marketing to your clients. To make sure your email marketing campaigns are working effectively review your campaigns for the five C's.

1.  Clear . What are you trying to communicate to your customers and why? Email marketing needs to be clear in order to be understood and actioned. It is surprising the number of emails that are sent with no specific purpose in mind. Be clear – is your email marketing campaign trying to sell products, get customers to book an appointment or build relationships with customers for the future?

2Communicates useful information . People want to read information that is directly relevant to them and their needs. Ensure all your emails provide clear and useful information to help your customers make informed decisions. Include testimonials and other supporting information in your email marketing so your customer knows that your product “works”.

3Call to action . Does each email in your email marketing campaign have a clear call to action? Does it ask your customer to call for more information, purchase this product, click here for a download? An unambiguous call to action will increase your conversion rate.

4. Compliant with anti-spam regulations . Know the law and make sure every email marketing campaign you do is 100% compliant.

5.  Click throughs and Conversions . Track your click-throughs and conversion rates. Email marketing is a very quick medium – if you are getting low click through or conversion rates, try different subject lines, headlines or content to test for improvements. Use the speed in this medium to refine your email marketing campaigns for optimal results.
